About Us
The annual Santa Barbara Community Prayer Breakfast traces its origins to 1958. It was called the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast, and was modeled after the Washington, C.D. President's Prayer Breakfast, which first occurred in 1953. The initial Santa Barbara Prayer Breakfast resulted from the vision and leadership of local real estate developer, Bill Alexander, who stayed actively involved in the breakfast until 1998.
For more than 25 years, the Mayor of Santa Barbara was the sponsor of the breakfast, annually sending out invitation letters which informed the public that tickets to the breakfast could be obtained at City Hall, the County administration building, and from the Chamber of Commerce.
In 1985, the breakfast had a new name, the Community Prayer Breakfast, and a new sponsor, the Christian Business Men's Committee of Santa Barbara. That group of Santa Barbara men has continued to sponsor the breakfast to the present date.
